to air during the SuperBowl.
$3 million a pop and they won't take the money... wow.
one is from PETA.. they say that it is too racy..
and the other is from Catholicvote.com ..... they say that they aren't going to run advocacy ads.

Its in their discretion. Besides, in the wake of "nipple-gate" and a few other ads that have come under fire, I'm not surprised that they choose very conservatively. There's always someone out there just waiting to bitch and whine about how some stupid commercial is offensive or will scar them or their children for life.
Besides, I don't recall every seeing advocacy ads during the Super Bowl and I know that this isn't the first time PETA has had an ad rejected. I have no problem with either circumstance.
I say bring back the Budweiser frogs. :Phishfolk:

one could say that those were advocacy ads as well.
and the substance they advocate, while i do enjoy it myself from time to time, is quite dangerous & causes a lot of deaths.
as for PETA... like i've said before, i wish they would focus more on getting the facts out about factory farming & other horribly inhumane practices and less on trying to simply shock people into vegetarianism.

But they've always been there. Some recent Superbowl advocacy ads:

I have to disagree with you. I don't consider any of those advocacy ads. Perhaps my definition of advocacy differs from yours and if so, we can agree to disagree, but I can see why the CatholicVote spot was rejected. Even though I (personally) agree with its message, its potentially very controversial and definitely supports one side of a hotbutton topic.

What particularly undermines NBC's claim the CatholicVote ad was rejected because of a "no advocacy" rule is, according to PETA, NBC offered to run the PETA advocacy spot if they toned down the simulated sex. PETA declined. So the "no advocacy" rule was a smokescreen.
PETA claims the following is the text of the email from NBC. Note, there's nothing about "advocacy" cited - just prurience:
The PETA spot submitted to Advertising Standards depicts a level of sexuality exceeding our standards. Listed below are the edits that need to be made. Before finalizing the spot, we would like to view a Quicktime file as well as a DVD with high resolution.
:12- :13- licking pumpkin
:13- :14- touching her breast with her hand while eating broccoli
:19- pumpkin from behind between legs
:21- rubbing pelvic region with pumpkin
:22- screwing herself with broccoli (fuzzy)
:23- asparagus on her lap appearing as if it is ready to be inserted into vagina
:26- licking eggplant
:26- rubbing asparagus on breast

Vice President, Advertising Standards

So, unless PETA is flat-out lying on their website, it's clear NBC's Advertising Standards group is all about advocation via omission. NBC has every right to do this. I just don't like them lying about their reasons.

this country has enough of a cult problem without them airing ads during the super bowl.
