OK, so my father has graciously offered to purchase a drum kit for Abby, my 11 year old. (they decided this after Jerry was shamelessly fundraising for it and asked for 20 bucks toward the cause. He really wants to get his band together.)
So my question to yall is, where do I start? I know nothing about this particular instrument. Any advice, suggestions, recommendations, etc?
Much appreciated.

try craigs list, pawn shops, news pappers,e-bay,flee markets, yard sales, music shops is a good start to try to find a good starters kit. since she is still quite young i would not worry about the name brand of the kit just get something Affordable to sart she can always upgrade as she gets better and older. good for her and jerry for picking a good age to start getting to learn to play music together.:clapping::dance:
i would suggest against "beginners" instruments. buy something decent so when he's 15 and his derelict friends start learning nirvana songs he wont have a kiddy set to play on, he will have something a lil better.

I might know where you can find a used kit. It's a bit of a beater and has been sitting in my old basement for a year or so but it has snare/bass/high hat/tom toms/ cymbal. It would be cheap if the owner wants to finally get rid of it. Want me to check? I don't recall if there's a stool.

If you have a daddy's junky music store near check them out, they usally have decent kits in the 300 to 400 range.I actually have been thinking about picking on up for the kids/me to jam with, sam has been getting really good at guitar and I think it's time to start some kind of band:smile:

This is sort of the direction I was heading in...not something outrageous, but not something she will get frustrated with too soon. And the kids are pretty good with their instruments, they know they aren't toys. They're instruments.
But there isn't anything in particular I should look for in terms of the qualityu I'm buying? Like how to tell is the heads are any good, etc? I mean, I really know squat about drums other than they make my booty bounce.

Don't worry so much about the heads... they're cheap and easy to replace. Make sure the drums themselves and the hardware (i.e. stands) are in good shape. And the cymbals too. :)

A buddy has a Tama Swingstar Kit for $200. Includes:
Bass 22"
Tom13"
Tom 12"
Floor Tom 16"
Pearl Snare is 15" deep chrome (whatever that means)
He says it needs:
Hi-Hats
Crash
Ride
and all the stands for the cymbals.
Although I'm pretty sure he's going to throw two of the three cymbals that I need. The pieces all look in really good conditon, and he says the heads on the toms are new.
This is good right?
