i teach 5th grade math and teach my kids how to square and cube numbers, as well as find the square root.

AT the moment we are adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.

Aidan is 7, in the first grade, and gets pulled out for accelerated math. They just started fractions.

Dear Erin,

Please come teach me math. Once Aidan gets past decimals and fractions, I will no longer be able to help him with his math homework!

Caleb is in third grade. He is starting to memorize his multiplication tables.

Emily is in 8th grade and is taking 9th grade Algebra.

My daughter is in Kindergarten and her math is mostly with change and basic counting. She can also add a couple of numbers together when we use real objects.

My son is in 6th grade and hasn't asked me one question on his homework yet this year. He is doing VERY well in Math (and everything else) so I have no idea what kind of Math he is doing right now. MAN am I psyched. Ya know I ALWAYS wanted kids but no one ever told me I had to go through school 2 more times. Jonah's 4th grade was the worst so far for Math and spelling for me.

Ravn, i'd love to be your homework helper.

with decimals it's all about place values...tens, vs tenths ect.
fractions easy as pie(literally)
I think adults that have issues with math is becuase no one ever explained WHY we do certain math...it makes all the difference in the world...I didn't do well in grade school in math becuae I needed to know why i multipied the fractions and when i divided them i had to flip one over!

I did pretty well until about, oh, 7th grade. My brain just spazzes on algebra and the like. I don't remember this, but my Mom says that my 4th grade math teacher was horrible, and mean and is the one that made me not like math and doubt my abilities. I can do decimals and fractions only because they are money! My younger sister, on the other hand, got a 101 in geometry and called it "advanced coloring"

I can't help Em with her math this year. Algebra and Trig and pre-calc were classes I just got through and then forgot most of. I didn't take one bit of math in college. I did like geometry though...she has that next year....either honors 9th or regular with 10th graders (more likely the 2nd as she's doing well but not excellent in algebra)...high school and the big boys...oh my!

see, this was my question. Rio's 4, in Pre K and they have her doing regular math, numbers plus numbers without pictures and they don't want me to help her too much.

How is it that in the second worst state in the country, they are pushing the kids so much?

They also want her to be reading.

since you are considered the 2nd worse they are pushing the kids...I see it happen in my district all the time.

They want to see improvoement. most likely the folks on the state board of ed had very little time teaching in a classroom and are all methods based...very little real child experience.

This being said I taught almost all of my prek 4s to read, but it was on thier own time...I never forced them

Joia

that's cool. when it comes to reading, Rio is ready and she is actually one of the fastest learners in the class (not to toot my own daughter's horn), but then there's the problem: she finishes her work very quickly and is then bored and disruptive while waiting for the other kids to catch up.

I was going to start a thread like this last week, but got distracted. I have a fourth and fifth grader, and Abby is always asking me to help, and I never really know if I'm doing it correctly. They're working with variables and fractions, and converting fractions to decimals and the other way around and jeepers- thank god for the tutor.

I made A's in my college math classes- but those were 10 years ago.

.

Because unfortunately they mistake 'teaching to the test' for learning  It happens all the time. If a district or area or whatever is doing poorly, they drill & practice this shit until they're purple.

State curriculum standards :joker: Hate em! What they don't realize is the gaps you fill with rote memorization will eventually come back to haunt you.

If she's having a hard time Joia - help her. Show her more concrete, age appropriate materials. Have her add with blocks or other manipulatives so that it is actually meaningful to her.

I say show her. Help her. Who gets the right to tell you how to raise your child. If she's having a hard time their way, help her with her own way :)

My 7th grader is doing ratios right now. My 4th grader is doing fractions. My kindergardener is doing addition. I'm trying to understand why there's always too much month left at the end of the money.

 I used to do that, when I was a wee lass. Go, Rio! (except for the disruptive and bored, thing) Can you encourage her to turn her paper over and draw while she waits for the other kids to finish, or something? (watch, she'll get in trouble for that, too)

((brains))

I thought that was kind of advanced for preK math, too, but I think it's cool that she's learning more math in preK than I was.

aidan is in kindergarden. last year (in PK4) they learned to count to 100 and basic addition and subtraction and Aidan learned to read. Right now they are still working on the addition and subtraction but also a little multiplication. and the reading gets even better!

If Rio is finishing early & is bored, ask the teacher if she can give Rio extra work to do - maybe higher level work. If she won't find out if you can send some in for her to do when she finishes early.

That's an excellent suggestion, however we tried that... Rio could do between 4-6 pages of work per 1 page of everyone else, but if the last student finished their one page before Rio finished whichever page she was on and it was time to move on, Rio would lose it if she couldn't finish, so...then, by letting her "move on" she would hold everyone back in the end because then it would take time to get her settled down in order to move on to the next thing...

Also, the school director said that it's important for Rio to learn how to sit quietly and wait for further instructions.

According to the school director, there is only a small handful (3 out of 18) that is ready to learn how to read, Rio included in that handful...

Kaela was in the same boat..I think the teacher handled it well...she started giving kaela more advanced work to do in the same subject of everyone else..this slowed her down and worked out well for all.

that's what they do. They get different pages depending on their ability level.

In Mass, the MCAS get me fried.... As I used to teach, the math is all over the place.. Hope, who is 8 and in 3rd grade, has to know how to draw a graph as part of curriculum.... Granted she is on IEP and what not.. but I just can't believe how they push the information at the kids and expect them to understand half of it.... Any one know the difference between proper, collective, concrete and countable nouns?? They have to be able to figure those out.... I don't see any of it relating to any real world applications... unless you are an editor, writer or English major... but in 3rd grade.. come on..

At 4?!?! To a point yes, but please! This is my problem - curriculum is so developmntally inappropriate.

At first they moved Kaela into the older kids class..but it wasn't working and stressed her..she is at the same level as kids two years older than her as far as the learning and comprehension but NOT socially on par. She wasn't ready to sit still as long as bigger kids do for one thing:lol: It was too serious too fast for her..we wanted her to still be able to play and have wiggle time..so she went back with her peers and gets the older work.

I am amazed what our kids are learning at this age...SO much more than I did. I wasn't taught to read and spell till first grade...although I COULD do both before that thanks to gramma:heart: Computers! HAHA! I wasnt tech savvy till college! Kaela can move all over computers and games with no help. Its pretty awesome to watch.
