I was wondering if anyone has ever been prescribed progesterone by their obgyn?
I stopped my birth control in Aug 08, after eight years I decided I wanted my hormones to be natural. Everything was going fine until Nov 08. I did not get my period, which I thought may be the gift of another child. Fast forward three months and about $100 in pregnancy tests, I'm not pregnant and still have not had a period.
I went to the obgyn and my exam and pap came back normal and they are not sure why I have stopped ovulating at the age of 25. Heh.
So my Dr prescribed progesterone. She says that I take it for 5 days and a week later I should have a cycle. I know she is a good Dr but I just want some other input from women who have been through a similar experience. I am a little nervous about putting more hormones into my body at this point.
So are their any ladies out there who can either give me support or have some similar stories?
Thanks in advance

I would just let your body do it's own thing. I had pretty much the same senerio as you, except after about 3.5 months of no period they did an ultrasound and found a sac. They took my HCB hormone levels and they wern't rising so they sceduled a D&C about a week later. The day of the D&C they did another ultrasound to get the exact location of the sac. They found it, with a heartbeat. 9 months later, Frankie was born. NO explanation....nothing. There were no answers, it was just one of those things.

I would keep waiting to see what is going on. Get a second opinion. Your body knows better than any doctor.

Thank you. I have an ultrasound scheduled for Wednesday. I'm not going to fill the prescription. I know the dr means well, but I can't bring myself to take more hormones at this point.

i just watched a whole show on hormone replacement therapy on a recent Oprah (you can probably still watch it on her website).

personally i have a perspective of not wanting to put anything in my system, BUT if you are lacking in something, that you should do what you can to get yourself balanced. like taking vitamins. or bipolar medication. if you're not producing enough hormones, what's wrong with taking some to get balanced?

how are you feeling otherwise?

(i'd love to get Summer's thoughts on this)

Gotta somehow figure out what your body is telling you first. Have you been trying to get pregnant? Has your diet or exercise routines changed dramatically? Are you way overweight? Are you totally stressing over pregnancy? (that is what did it for me when I had Frankie, I think. I was 25 also at that time)
Gotta ask yourself some of these things first.

8 years is a long time to be on a specific birth control - specially for someone only 25. I would have to quess it has something to do with your body adjusting to all the hormone changes going on. Did you doctor do any blood work or talk to you about any other reasons this could be happening?

I've taken Progesterone a few times. I have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). "With PCOS, the ovaries produce a quantity of follicles that generate high levels of estrogen but never release an egg. The excessive estrogen stimulates the uterine lining to thicken to a point where it must slough off but doesn't do so on it's own. Women with this condition are not having what are considered “real” menstrual periods because they do not regularly ovulate."

My doctor has only made me take Progesterone when I missed more than 3 periods and luckily, that's only happened a few times. For me, it brings my period on RIGHT AWAY and it's usually not a normal cycle. It's like all the missed cycles in one.

I hope you get things worked out soon.

I have a hormonal imbalance (polycystic ovarian syndrome).

I was on the pill from when I was maybe 15 till 21. Lost insurance, stopped taking the pill, got insurance Feb of last year, got back on.

For about 6 years I was off the pills and it was not a good thing. I was an emotional mess. There were times that I couldn't control my emotions, especially negative ones. I experience weight gain that I couldn't control, which was real depressing. There were period of 2-4 months I didn't get my period. By the time Feb. 08 came up, I had had my period for 5 months already. I was prescribed MEDROXYPROGESTERONE to stop it and then started the pill. The first month back on was an emotional one; I was crying a lot for no reason. But after that I feel more like myself again. I have better control of my anger, depression is gone, I feel "normal".

I've never looked into healthy alternatives or any alternatives b/c I didn't realize I needed to be on the pill to regulate my system. I usually don't take medicine when I'm sick b/c I feel I can do other things to boost up my immune system. However, this is something I actually don't mind. Besides regulating my system, this balance that has resulted has been great for my emotional well being.

I only realized I was unbalanced when I got balanced. I will probably stay on until it's time to plan for children. And I'm comfortable with the cons of taking it, b/c the pros are worth it for me..... I think you have to ask yourself what is best for you and what you feel comfortable doing. If uncomfortable, get a second opinion. I went to see an endocrinologist to further discuss my imbalance and what i needed to do/take and why. It gave me peace of mind.

You may have needed also to give your body more time to get used to not being on the pills and to get to a natural routine (i couldn't think of a better phrase).

Thank you all for the great advice. I am not filling the prescription until more test results come back. I have been on several different birth controls over the last 8 years. The ring, depo inj, patch, and almost every pill known to man. I had a child at 17 and just wanted to wait until my situation was more stable for a second child. I stopped because my husband and I decided to let nature take it's course. I was sick of all the crap that came along with the pill. Lack of sex drive, mood swings, spotting..

I have to go in for another round of blood work tomorrow. My HCG was slightly elevated, but it could be a false positive. The Dr called me herself and I was a little upset as her nurse told me I was not pregnant Friday, then this news today. Either way I am not getting myself excited just yet.
