Hello everyone

Thanks for a great festival.Again.

I've been out of the scene for quite a few years, getting my education and
working on my career in Oriental and Zen garden design/Landscape
Architecture; before that,I was in a band and was a tourhead/ranbow family
member.
After going to the vibes in 05 and again this year in 08, I would like to
commend you all for keeping the subculture alive and moving it forward for
the next generation. Thank you for your efforts.
I looked around at the site this year and I started thinking about what I
would do to inject a sense of the old "family village" element from the
70s into the scene... the same element that inspired me when I was new to
it. I listened to Ken's speech at the vibes this year and what he said
really struck a chord with me.... " You older folks need to teach the the
kids how to do this." He was right on.I noticed that a lot of the kids had
the clothes and the lingo but lacked the openness or inspiration that we
found so magical in the old days.As an old timer I have things to
teach, and so do many others just like me who come to the
festival. Therefore,I have an idea that I would like to share.

The Bridgeport site is an amazing venue and the organization of the
festival was superb, to my thinking.
The division of camps made sense, as did their locations.
My idea is in 3 parts: a) Teach the people. b) Inspire the people. c)
Involve the people.

New Educational Camping Area
I'm interested in spearheading green vibes campsite based on the concept of
" High consciousness camping" :
Part of the green vibes project, whose purpose is to teach festival
campers how to create their own functional "tribal village"in which they
live for the weekend, and thus contributing to a much stronger "tribal"
environment overall.

What I am talking about is a concept that I call "Waxwood camp".... This
is a space within the prettier parts of the wooded camp areas on the east
side somewhere... a small area... maybe 30 tents or so to create a "green
vibes village"... like a vibes garden and artist /activist area.. an
oasis within the campsite that is well designed, beautifully decorated with
plants and nice things, ( no trashy looking plastic or stuff spewed all
over the ground... no draped tarps between cars for shelter,etc..)inspiring
to walk through, kept litter free, efficient, and informative as well as
friendly. We would seek artisan, craft, musical and alternative/sustainable
living people to create the camp...a "Demo" of what is possible for
everyone who camps with a little inspiration and education, which this camp
will provide to everyone who wanders through. This is not a private
camp, but it has boundaries and reserved places for the occupants. It is
the "Utopian real life interactive" part of the green vibes program. Each
occupant should contribute something to the overall cohesion of the scene
there... Someone who does organic farming, someone who knows
renewable/sustainable passive solar housing design, artists who do
environmental art... things made of found objects on site, instrument
makers,a place for yoga to happen,etc...In other words, a camp for people
who teach by example,in an environment that is laid out with Feng Shui
beautification... a "power spot" for people to discover and become
inspired by.
Because this is a demonstrative concept, certain elements need to be left
out.
No vending,no booths,no harsh unnatural lights like florescent
bulbs...etc.

Second part of my idea:
Inspire the people. Word spreads when something cool is happening. The
vibes has a lot of great ideas that work. I would like to create a
demonstrative link between the information that is handed out at the
nonprofit booths, and it's message and concept constructed into a real
functioning camp. This way, people will SEE how they can go green,(at least
at the show)rather than just read about it. BIG difference in social and
environmental impact, which ultimately translates into lower overhead for
the production.
My own contribution would be teaching how to create beautiful spaces for
very little cost, using found objects and recycled yard sale junk, and plant
material,that generates virtually no trash.

In Mariaville in 05, I had a VIP campsite, which was visited by some
people who got my wheels turning.
One was a writer for a magazine who interviewed me for an article she was
writing on waste and environmental impact created by large scale rock
festivals. The other was a vibes staff member, who suggested that I write
an article for the website about
conscious camping,and artistic camp construction.

Third part of my idea:
Involve the people
Create a high profile award ceremony for the most beautiful or well
crafted campsite... Advertise the hell out of it all year... post links to
cool websites about sustainable, artistic and clean living. I know of a
dozen cutting edge people right now who have websites.
People not only get taught and inspired by the Waxwood camp, they get
educated by the non profit booths, and ultimately acknowledged by the
Gathering of the vibes itself!

The winner every year should get a good prize for their efforts. Say, comp
VIP for the next year, and the award should be done onstage before the last
act on Saturday night. Involvement and acknowledgment in front of a
festival crowd will get a lot of people on board, tighten the sense of
community, lower the trash level and wastefulness, and turn the vibes into a
greater force for change as well as the most kick ass festival around!

I am the master pruner and Oriental garden designer for Matterhorn
Nursery, inc. in Rockland,NY, an internationally renowned perennial, tropical, deciduous and conifer plant nursery and design/build
firm/craft village.
