I was thinking of doing this once it gets to a longer length. I could probably do it right now, but when I chop it off, I don't want to be left with a Dorothy Hammill ( :funny1: )
I'm still unsure of which organization to use. Locks of Love. American Cancer Society. Are there more?

When I did it last year, my hairdresser just gave me a pre-addressed envelope for Locks of Love so I didn't really do any additional research. Just slapped on some postage.
I think you have to have at least 10 or 11"

I've donated my hair to Locks of Love... I believe three times. I've always submitted 11 inches or so as that's what was requested when I looked it up to donate the first time.

Sure did....Right after I found out mom had cancer I cut all my hair off and donated 13 inches to locks of love
Just a little something I could do when I felt so helpless. Wigs are VERY expensive for cancer patients if they don't have health insurance. There are ways that Dr's can write off the wigs or prosthetics (sp?) to make the insurance companies foot the bill  My mom had the most amazing encologist, he was the kindest man in the world, I think of him often (((Dr. Miller)))
They dont take color treated hair though...so even if I wanted to right now, I couldn't donate. :undecided:
Rich, thats awesome .... like really really awesome.

There's another organization called Wigs for Kids. They need 12" at least though. But it's wigs made for little kids that are suffering from cancer specifically

Thanks Tatum! Great chatting last night!
If someone can use it when I am done with it, why not? It was such a good feeling the first time I donated it that I grew my hair out again so I could donate it once more. My hair grows pretty quick so a third time was not too surprising.

Indeed!
I donated 13 inches to locks of love in Nov., but I just found out that they only make wigs for kids with permanent hair loss. So if they have cancer, they don't get a wig because their hair will grow back.
Wigs for kids does wigs for all children with hair loss, so next time will will donate to them.

I knew there was something, but I couldn't remember what! Thank you! I think after the wedding I'll be donating to Wigs for Kids :)
Yes......... I believe they don't always make certain wigs with color treated or gray hair.

Gah, I'm dying to color my hair darker and do something different with it, but I really want to grow it out and donate it! I wish my hair grew quicker!!! :ravn:

No joke! I'm on prenatals and it's not to get pregnant. Most brides use them to grow their nails and hair. They're the same vitamins you should take everyday anyways, just a little more to them :)

When my hair was starting to fall out (chemo), I cut it off and donated it..had a LONG ponytail. My daughter did the cutting...it was a whole moment.
Anyway, my sister did the same at the time. Mik was playing Jesus at church that Easter so he couldn't. He has since donated his hair twice and is about to do it again.

I thought Locks of Love wouldn't accept colored hair.

I don't think they do which is why I'm waiting to do my hair darker until after I chop off my natural hair now. :)

my hair doesn't grow very long before it starts to break off and it is very thin anyhow, so no.

i'm thinking about doing it again myself - donated 14 inches to locks of love about 6 years ago - but i'm on the fence about giving it to them again. i see pantene has a program now too beautiful lengths or something like that for women cancer patients i think. other than lol and wigs for kids are there others?
i probably could donate about 15 inches and have shoulder length hair left

My hair is at a stand-still. I just want to chop it! Bah! :ravn:
(But then as soon as I chop it, I'm going to cry and want long hair again. )
I'm still very indecisive on whether or not after I donate if I want to dye my hair darker...I'm lazy and don't feel like keeping up with the roots...NOR do I feel like paying however much for it every month.
How do temporary colors work? Do they really wash all the way out after a few weeks? Do they ruin your hair? What's the deal yoooooo?

i donated my hair twice so far! once it i gave 18 inches another I gave 12. My hair grows really fast. My mom battled cancer twice and well I want to help as many as i can.
Just take care of your hair to give them some good stuff!
oo i used locks of love but I think they all do the same thing.

I used to use Herbal Essences Natural Instincts to make my hair a few shades lighter..this is when I was working outside..I would redo it every 4--6 weeks. I haven't done it in a long time though, mainly b/c at one point I went to permanent haircolor for a while (have since stopped that as well). I did have roots but they were subtle.
My hairdresser says Herbal Essences is one of the worst products you can use on your hair though...it really dries your hair out. I stopped using the shampoo a few years ago and only use the conditioner now (I use Dove shampoo). But, every other time I wash and condition it with Pantene b/c the HE does make my hair very dry but I love the way it smells. Yes, my haircare is complicated.
I am growing my hair out now and hoping it will all be the same length by the end of the year (probably around chin length at that time) so I can keep growing it long enough to donate it, which will take at least another year. I have super thick hair with a lot of wave so hopefully they can get a decent wig out of it. Once I chop it off again that's it for me growing it out ever again. The inbetween stage is so annoying!

About them getting too much hair and getting rid of the unused? I've read those before. I'd be happy to see some that you are talking about, though. I want to make sure my hair goes somewhere good when the time comes.

from what i remember, its not so much that, its the fact that people think its going to cancer patients when its really going to people with alopecia. i seem to remember there being a list of other places that actually use it for cancer patients. i have donated lots of hair to a group that makes oil absorbers from it. they use them to soak up oil from spills and keep our waters clean. they take all sorts of hair from dogs, cats, humans, could be dyed, short little pieces, didnt' matter. i'll find the stuff for you, i think it was the long hair community.
Locks of love is for alopecia, but alopecia is a side effect of one of the vaccines... there is an org called wigs for women, I think that takes hair to make wigs for women with cancer.
Locks of love takes color treated hair, just not bleach damaged.
Locks of love sells the grey hair they get to offset the cost of making wigs. If you have 10" of hair to donate, and you don't need to know where it's going, send it to locks of love and whether or not they can specifically use it, it will get used.
Otherwise, look into the cancer sites...
I'm interested in the oil spill clean up!

As a person who had a terrible and painful bout of alopecia as a child and adolescent, I'd say it is still a good reason to donate ones hair. I was thinking about this the other day. I wonder if I were to cut now how many inches there would be.

Cut your hair?
My hair is getting long again and I was thinking about growing it out again to cut and donate... but I'm not sure if I want to do it now... it's gotten pretty thick and it's getting muggy out these days.
