My 12 year old wants a microphone for his birthday. He would really like a cordless but would also be happy with a cord. I have no idea what I'm looking for, but would like to get him a good quality that doesn't cost a fortune. (he's serious about music, but he is also 12 years old.) For Christmas I planned to get him an amp (that's what I would need for it, right?) Figured he could use his guitar amp with the microphone until then. Am I correct?
So, do yall suggestions for either the mic and the amp?

mics don't work particularly well through a guitar amp; the speakers aren't designed to push vocals. You need a PA with at least a small mixer. Probably the cheapest route you can go for that is to find a used Fender Passport system.

As for a mic, can't go wrong with a Shure SM58

Michelle, definitely go with the SM58 for a vocal mic. Look around on sites like Musician's Friend, Music123, etc. for deals on microphonones before you just buy at the local music store.

Yeah, the mic is within my price range. The Fender Passport would definitly need to come used. Costs more new than I paid for his guitar.

I might suggest a Mackie SRM150. It's small, lightweight, and has built in mixing capability & EQ. Also can accept instrument input and has RCA line jacks for connection of CD/MP3 players, etc. Sounds great for it's size. Guitar Center has 'em for $299, less if on sale.

Cool, purchased the mic package, with the stand and cord and all. Made sense since he'll be singing as he plays guitar. Now to work on pricing the Christmas gift of the PA.
Thanks yall.

Shure SM58 = Great choice!
It might be worth checking e-bay for a used PA like this Fender passport. It's not bad for a first PA.

K yall, is there any reason i shouldn't go withthe Mackie? I've found it for 240, including shipping. where it's so much smaller, I think it will be easier for Jerry to travel with. (he spends a great deal of time at Dad's and is always on the move.)

I bought a small 100 watt PA with 2 small cabinets from musician's friend for 199.00.
