so as it turns out i have strep. my dr put me on penicillin for 10 days 4 x a day. my problem is, i have a very bad digestive system and antibiotics caused me some very serious problems in the past. i have pro-biotics at home, how can i take them without affecting the antibiotics.

ummm I'm not quite sure how the two will interact (((paging Sums) ))) But I don't think it'll hurt them too much...i take acidophlous while on anti's all the time...acutally told I should.

Penicillin makes me break out in hives, but it's one of the few that don't reak havoc on my digestive track.

Try drinking aloe vera juice first thing in the morning. It should help the digestive track while it's being attacked by evil pharmies.

yeah, I would do everything that erin said to do... pro-biotics shouldn't interfere with the antibiotics.. but I'm not a doctor.. Aloevera juice is amazing for the tummy... definitely get some acidopholus as well.. you can get peppermint and mango chewable tablet things as well if you feel all that isn't helping...peppermint tea is always good for the tummy... ... (but be warned - the aloe vera juice tastes pretty gross.. at least I think so)

i think there's a non gross tasting aloe vera juice out there. for the life of me, can't remember the name right now. maybe george's?
go to your local heath food store. i'm sure someone there will be able to help you out with that

feel better!

did you ask the pharmacist? or maybe give your belly dr a call and see what he/she says.
I haven't been on antibiotics since I started the probiotics last year so I haven't had to deal with this (yet).

good luck

There shouldn't be an interaction with the pro biotic and the antibiotic.
It is just replacing the healthy flora of your intestines.
Make sure you take the acidophilus before, during and after you are on the antibiotics.

what britt said. just stagger the probiotic so you're taking it opposite times. like if the antibiotic is morning and night, take the probiotic twice during the day.

after you're done with the antibiotic, take probiotics in a double or triple dose daily for at least a few months.

i would also (knowing you have stomach problems) recommend taking marshmallow root or slippery elm tea daily.

I always eat lots of yogurt whenever I take antibiotics (my stomach is also sensitive to them). It was a suggestion given to my by my doctor several years ago and it works like a charm for me.

How are you feeling?

I am so prone to strep. I'm surprised my parents didn't have my tonsils taken out.

I hope you're feeling better. Being sick sucks.

thanks wende .. it took me two weeks to find out i had strep and to get on meds, so it's a little slow recovering now. i slept most of the weekend and my throat still hurts if i sneeze :( ...

i haven't had strep in YEARS!! even all the times josh had it i never caught it from him, maybe you're only immune to your own kids germs .. haha

I have no advice, but wanted to send a reminder that if you are on hormonal birth control, antibiotics will make them ineffective for this cycle, so use a backup method for the next month! :)
