First weekend is THIS weekend!!

Ive already started meeting with a few students that are in the central-shore jersey area. It's definitely helpful. One of them actually lives in Red Bank, so I already have a friend to go to class with

LiL MaMa
01-12-2009, 11:54 AM
That's fantastic.
Now that you've met some friends and have someone to go with you must be way less anxious.

My friend Catie and I are doing this together. We're actually trying to plan a day in the city so we can see what the commute will be like

georgi
01-14-2009, 11:08 AM
It is something I'd be interested in. :)

I printed out the pdf packet and look at it from time to time. I guess instead of just looking and sighing I should just decide if I really want to do it or not.

Who knows, maybe I'll join you this time next year! :bliss:

LiL MaMa
01-14-2009, 11:50 AM
dooo it! I'm going to be registering late feb or early march for next year. you should def call them though. The women I spoke with was fabulous she answered all my questions and helped me figure out an affordable payment plan.

HoopsTer
01-14-2009, 12:26 PM
Let me know if youre really interested, I believe I can still get 2k off the tuition for you if you enroll and give them my name :)

and yeah, the finance department is AMAZING. they totally worked with me to make it doable :)

georgi
01-14-2009, 12:52 PM
But here's the thing. I still can't really tell you what I want to do with my life. I change my mind every day. Is this geared more towards something you do on the side, or for an actual full-time committed job?

HoopsTer
01-14-2009, 01:11 PM
People do both, actually.
I am doing it mostly for me...for my own health and emotional well being. I would LOVE a career change and the potential for that after IIN is good so that would just be an added bonus.

LiL MaMa
01-14-2009, 03:09 PM
I'm with HoopsTer on this one. I'm going for my own well being. There are alot of health problems in my family so I want to learn any and everything I can on how to live a healthy lifestyle.... being a certified health counselor is a nice perk though! :)

georgi
01-15-2009, 09:12 AM
Yeah, I would like to go for my well being. I've recently started taking better care of myself, and I feel absolutely AMAZING! :bliss: I'd love to be a certified health counselor on the side. :)

And Ter...how long does the $2,000 off tuition for your recommendation last for?

LiL MaMa
01-15-2009, 09:17 AM
I don't think the $2,000 off tuition has a time limit as long as you say she reffered you.

:)

georgi

HoopsTer

Sweet! I'd definitely like to look into this for the future. :)

yup, I think lilMama is right. ;-)

and the finance office really is amazing! They dropped and extended my payments without any hassle at all....and the payment plan is no interest too! (if you dont want to get a loan and pay in full)

HoopsTer
01-15-2009, 11:35 AM
I also think that there is an additional tuition discount if you enroll with a friend or family member. I tried to find someone to go with me, but no one was really interested. :crook:

I wish everyone would go through this program. I wish Stephen would go through it with me....maybe I can talk him into it for next year.

I really really want to get into the immersion program. The next 8 months are going to be a lot of work. I am going to be a busy girl. I hope the people in my life understand.

They taste just like regular brownies.... I think people hear the words bean brownie and assume they won't like them.

when I made them for the first time I didn't even tell dave I used beans until after he tried them :funny1:

If I tell him before hand I alwys get the "ew that's so gross you can eat it but I'm not gonna"

If I tell him afterwards I get the "OMG honey that's fantastic why didn't I think of that!":lol:

you can do that. You can also try cooking them a little longer.

I wouldn't recomend putting cheyenne pepper on them unless you're a fan of spicy food. I tried them with cheyenne and my poor mouth was on FIRE!!! I MEAN TEARS IN MY EYES FIRE!

Im starting to rekindle my love of journaling! I started journaling when I was in like 5th grade and did it straight through until some time after law school. I have volumes of paper journals and pages and pages on Xanga and livejournal. Then for some reason I stopped. I dunno why.

Something about IIN is making me "pick up my pen" again. I really want to document this whole learning process and transformation. :)

*sigh*

It's really hard to alter your eating habits without upsetting loved ones and the people around you.

I'm not trying to change anyone else. I'm just trying to change me. Telling me I "threw a wrench in dinner plans" becuase I requested whole wheat pasta is hurtful. This whole thing is really, really hard for me. I've battled eating disorders almost my entire life. Food has been my comfort and my best friend...the thing that takes away my pain. I want a gigantic piece of normal-pasta lasagna loaded with cheese just as much as the next American. Don't make me feel badly about it when I actually execise the willpower to say no or to opt for a healthier choice. This is hard enough as it is. :crying2:

Sorry. Just had to get that off my chest.

LiL MaMa
01-27-2009, 05:48 PM

why can't they just try the whole wheat?

I hear ya btw... dinner is alwys the hardest part of the day now that I'm eating healthier and trying to find things that Dave and I will both like. Not easy!

georgi
01-28-2009, 06:49 AM
I'm glad that Rich and I like the same things. I asked him a few weeks ago "what would you do if I decided to become a vegetarian?". He responded with..."you can start cooking your own dinner". :lmao:

LiL MaMa
01-29-2009, 09:15 AM
Sometimes Dave and I will eat different dinners but we'll still eat dinner together.

If he doesn't want to change I'm not gonna force him to change, but I won't let that get in the way of the changes I want to make in my life. It doesn't matter to me if we eat the same thing as long as we eat together.

georgi

Yeah, that's really what I think too. I tell him I'll just make my own, but he doesnt seem generally pleased with that.

But I will say, after the lasagna fiasco, he did cook me curried lentils :)

Why isn't he pleased with that?

Dave and I will also cook together (not the same meal but we'll do it together) Sometimes he'll try whatever it is that I made and He'll actually like it.

HoopsTer
01-29-2009, 10:58 AM
Im not sure, actually.

I know that he really likes to cook for me and when i dont want it or would like something else it can upset him. He's a great cook, but very sensitive like that.

This weekend is weekend 2!!!
I am going out for lunch on Saturday with a few other yoga instructors to chat it up about incorporating yoga into our counseling. :)

Bionature whole wheat pasta is so good no one at my place ever questions it...they usually assume it's regular. Picky eaters even like it.

It's tough to make others eat healthier, people are set in their ways.

I would love a big honken cheeseburger often, but I choose to not eat it. I love food...oh how I love food, but I've learned if I want my body to treat me right I need to put in the right food.

I think your friends will slowly come around, or you'll figure out how to work (and eat) around them

I am so excited for you guys in IIN!
Enjoy the whirlwind.
It is a blast.
Keep us updated on how it is going.

Kristin-
Over time the small changes you make will have a profound effect on Dave.
There is no need to change him because he is already trying lots of the foods you make him. It will take him longer but he will be right on board with you before you even realize. Especially when you are in the school sharing all of your wonderful experiences with him. (It took my Dave over a year to begin to realize things. Now he is moving at a pace well beyond me!)

What happens if you can't make it to one of the weekends if you have prior engagements? Just curious.

Yeah, you're allowed to miss 4 classes (days, not weekends) and still graduate. But it's still really just a choice. Most events will happen again, and IIN only comes around once.

When I first registered and I knew I had conflicts I had planned on just using my 4 free get out of jail free cards. :funny1: But after attending two weekends, I dont want to miss a second of IIN. So, I'm being as responsible as I can be.

I am sacraficing A LOT for my committment to IIN.
No Hampton Phish tickets
No BFF bachelorette party in Atlantic City. (I certinaly wouldnt miss her wedding for IIN though!!)
No Stonehenge
No Vibes.

*sigh*
But this is my life, my health and my career. Vibes will be there next year, and phish probably will too.

where can i find the recipe for black bean brownies? i have extra black beans in my fridge!!!! tia.

HoopsTer
02-12-2009, 12:28 PM
Ingredients:

1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
3 eggs
3 tablespoons oil
4 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup sugar
a pinch salt
These are just the basic ingredients, feel free to change them up to meet your dietary standards. Vegans might enjoy replacing the eggs with bananas to maintain texture. Use organic and natural ingredients when possible.

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350* F.

Pour drained beans into a blender, set on puree and blend until smooth. Add in the rest of the ingredients and continue blending until evenly mixed.

Pour bean mixture into a greased 8 by 8 pan. Bake in oven for 30 minutes, or until toothpick placed in the center comes out clean.

HoopsTer
02-18-2009, 10:42 AM
If you want to get into the immersion program you have to have at least 5 paying clients by graduations.

As far as graduation requirements - you have to attend at least 20 classes, you have to have at least 8 sessions with your HC, you have to complete 6 health histories, and there are three exams based upon what is gone over in class.

I am not aware of a "paying clients" requirement for graduation. Finding clients, marketing and starting your business is pretty damn intimidating. However, the fast track program is pretty amazing. Staff at IIN is super supportive in person, via email, via phone and on the OEFs. The fast track work book pretty much puts an outline for a business plan straight into your lap! There are 2 additional "Fast Track" days that you can attend (full 8 hours of business building and marketing). The fast track program is really invaluable!! :)

Erin-
You would absolutely love and grow from the program.
It is definitely perfect for you!

Terra-
I am hoping to apply for Immersion down the line too.
Maybe this is the year for me :)
I would love to have a buddy like you to attend with.
Moving and starting a magazine last year really killed that goal for me.
But.....it can always happen again.

oohhmm Im not sure. I would talk to your admissions counselor and come up with a payment plan for you. Things may change from year to year. I know that had I paid in full, my tuition would have been $500 less. But because I didnt pay in full, the $500 was spread out over my payment plan- maybe that's considered the interest??

They do have a program with Bank of America.

This weekend is Weekend 3!! I really can't believe how fast it's all going. Going to IIN is already starting to open doors for me. It's amazing. I cant believe that by this time next year I will be out of the the legal biz entirely. It's so exciting!!

This weekend I am getting my new website!! and new business cards. I haven't quite figured out how I will link my new website to my old or vice versa, but either way wooohooO!

This weekend's curriculum is going to be a lot about Diet Theory. I'm pretty excited. It drives my bonkers when people are so pro this diet or anti that diet.
People need to realize that no one diet is perfect for everyone. It's all about bioindividuality.

I am meeting about 8 other students for lunch on Saturday for a target market lunch. I am still trying to hone in on what my vision is for my business and who my target market is so I am exploring all of my options. This one is "Pre Natal Nutrition and Green Babies" I am really interested in having a pre-natal/mommy baby focus. After I got my pre-natal yoga certification I was over the moon about wanting to be a doula. I think that was just the post certification buzz.....but I am still really interested in this demographic. Even though I have never been pregnant, I think pregnancy is such a beautiful and amazing thing. hmm yeah, anyway...just a thought! :)

And I am meeting LittleHoPeep for lunch on Sunday, woohoo! :)

I can't believe how giddy I get before my IIN weekends :funny1:

Terra...it is so cool to here all about your experiences. It's so inspiring!

Everyone needs to go:) They reduced tuition to 6995 and with a referral you get $2000 off on top of other discounts. That's crazy. I've been talking to Dan about going....I think he would love it!

I really would have loved to go with someone I knew. The experience is amazing and to get to share it with someone you know and love would be even more amazing.

But it's ok that I am going through this alone too. The synchronicity in IIN in amazing. I have made some really fantastic new friends and get me and understand where I am coming from on an entirely different level. Not on the "hippie" level where most of my friends get me, but something deeper. All my life I have had a really hard time being emotionally close to my friends. I just get to a point one way or another where I shut off and retreat in. I'm not really sure why, I just do. This has happened all throughout my life. It's probably a sensitivity thing. Normally people don't get it so I just stop trying to explain my emotions. I dont feel that "shut off" with my IIN friends the way I feel it with some of my closest friends here, from home, from college, law school...where ever. It's really hard to describe. It's just different. But either way, I'm glad for it. :)

New Blog Update, I'll just copy it here :)

When you say the words "Integrative Health" or "Integrative Nutrition" most people don't have a clue what you mean. American's today are used to going to their doctor when something has already gone wrong seeking a pill or an easy access cure. They want one answer. This philosophy, which has been promulgated by the traditionalist training of the medical community and the boom of the pharmaceutical industry is reason number one the United States is in a health crisis. Please don't be mistaken, we are indeed in a health crisis.

We are the most unhealthy first world nation in the world. 60% of deaths in the United States are attributable to chronic disease. Chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart attacks, stroke, and certain preventable cancers like prostate, colon and often breast and ovarian! Our nation is being crippled by chronic disease! Over 46 million citizens are uninsured or under insured. Health insurance premiums rise four times as fast as our pay rates. More than half the bankruptcies in the United States are from medical bills. 66%, SIXTY-SIX percent of US citizens are overweight or obese. Obesity in children has doubled in the past 30 years and tripled in adolescents! (this information was obtained from a presentation given by Dr. Theresa Kennedy)

The flaw in our system lies in its "curative" nature. Health in this country is addressed when something goes wrong. People don't pay attention to what they put in their body or what their body interacts with. We don't have a health care system; we have a SICK care system. We need to change to a preventative system. Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing. It's not merely the absence of disease. And this is one of our fundamental rights as human beings and as citizens of the United States.

I will say that again, it is a fundamental right for us to live in a state of complete physical, mental and social well being!!

The beautiful thing about this? Our current President, Barak Obama believes in this fundamental right. So much so that he has requested the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions to investigate the health crisis. On February 26th the Committee held a hearing. That hearing directly addressed integrative, yes Integrative Care: a Pathway to a Healthier Nation. Esteemed doctors including Dr. Oz, Dr. Mark Hyman, Dr. Dean Ornish, and Dr. Andrew Weil testified. The words that each of them brought up were integrative health, and "Health Coach." Yes, HEALTH COACH!

Video Tape of the hearing: http://help.senate.gov/Hearings/2009_02_26/2009_02_26.html

Knowing that our elected officials are learning about integrative health is one of the most exciting things I have seen in a LONG time. Our first day at IIN, Joshua said we were on the cusp of something great, that we were creating a health revolution. I believed him, but I wasn't sure the world would and I know that a good portion of people who are close to me wouldn’t. My family and many of my friends just roll their eyes at me when I talk about things like positivity, primary foods, organic produce, environmental toxicity, pesticides in Spenda, GMOs, hormones in beef…the list is endless really. They either don't care or don't believe me or are in denial. This committee hearing gives me hope.

Hope that people realize that disease is preventable! Hope in integrative care being mainstream and normal. Hope that it’s acceptable to have different answers for one problem. This committee hearing is proof that change is in the works. It may be an uphill battle, it may take a fight but it is happening. I am so excited and inspired to be a part of it. I don’t think I could have picked a better time to go through my training at IIN. We are the revolutionaries! We are the change makers!

HoopsTer
03-23-2009, 12:30 PM
and now a repost from the OEFs....if now isn't the time, I don't know what is!!!!

It’s an exciting time for integrative nutrition supporters! From the Obama’s organic garden, to the recent Senate testimony promoting integrative health and prevention and the efforts to promote sustainable food in our federal policy circles. There are a lot of disparate efforts creating positive change…and perhaps an opportunity for IIN to play big.

In the article “Is a food Revolution Now in Season?” (New York Times, March 22), Michael Pollan makes a bold statement saying today’s sustainable food activists lack political savvy, “The (sustainable food activists) movement is not ready for prime time. It’s not like we have an infrastructure with legislation ready to go.” What a shame that statement is – we have an audience with the president, his administration and Congress, yet aren’t ready for prime time. What’s it going to take to enter the big leagues and make it prime time?

Enter IIN. The country’s largest nutrition school, an 8,000+ member grassroots movement and a major catalyst for action. We have an exciting opportunity to take a lead role as an activist, collaborator and unifier in order to raise the level of awareness for integrative nutrition issues among policymakers on the federal level. At the same time, we can raise the school’s visibility and elevate our presence as a thought leader in integrative nutrition among the federal policy circles. Here are some thoughts about developing an IIN legislative/political strategy on the national level:

1) Develop a policy platform. Craft an “IIN Bill of Rights” (an IIN legislative agenda) that outlines all of the policy issues that the school promotes. From school nutrition, to the promotion of health counselors, to workplace wellness to the local food movement – the agenda must include a comprehensive and succinct view of where the school stands on important health issues and why.

2) Promote the platform. Meet with other leaders in the integrative nutrition field (other nonprofits, corporations, celebrity physicians, media and thought leaders who are vocal and active on these issues). Share the IIN platform. Meet with key policymakers in Congress (relevant Senate and House committees) and the administration (White House staff, Dept. of Health and Human Services, Dept. of Agriculture). Let’s replicate what’s been done on the local NYC level and bring it to the federal policy circles.

3) Mobilize the grassroots network. With a unified platform and message, we can easily educate, empower and mobilize IIN’s grassroots network (8,000+ graduates strong). Students are hungry to make a difference in the world, we just need to know how. Imagine, with the click of a mouse, mobilizing hundreds – if not thousands – of calls to legislators regarding support for (or against) important integrative health issues.

4) Playing Big: Build a Strong Integrative Nutrition Coalition. Currently, there are currently hundreds of disparate voices promoting integrative health and sustainable food in the federal policy circles. In order to make to the big time (and addressing Michael Pollan’s challenge), you need a strong coalition. Look at all of the major policy victories throughout history – no one company or organization does it alone. Take a page from the environmental movement and all of the victories they’ve sustained (air quality, water quality, extensive regulations to protect the environment.) Working together, they amassed major reforms and completely altered how big business does business in America and how citizens live their lives.

Can IIN play a leadership role in spearheading a broad integrative health coalition? Start the dialogue with current friends and figure out who needs to be at the table. Find and agree on common ground, mobilize support for a unified agenda and create an umbrella organization for others to join. Such a unified body can harness all of the scattered efforts and activity and begin to create an infrastructure that will be invited to the table when policy is being written, mobilize public support and consumer demand to influence the powers that be in Washington and drive the agenda for the future health of our nation, one policy at a time.

As much as I think the Distance Learning program is great there is a lot to be said of the positive feeling of being at class.

Yes, there are always naysayers when it comes to innovative or alternative health modalities. As Britt said in another thread on this topic, there is an incredible demand for holistic health. Our health care system right now isnt working becuase it's based on money and corporate greed. If the assistance of one health counselor helps someone to not need their pharmaceutical medications, you know that the pharmaceutical industry (and other corporate health money makers) are going to be adamantly against it.

I personally think that a lot of the animosity towards IIN and holistic health counselors comes from the fear of competition and lack of knowledge. As holistic health counselors, we are not trying to replace doctors, nurses, dietitians or therapists. IIN graduates and students are not in the PTP program to become nutritionists, doctors or dietitians. I think if we wanted to be that, we would have chosen the appropriate school, which is not IIN. There is a distinction. Each of these people are necessary and warranted in our society. We are striving to work in conjuction with them, not against them or to replace them.

The Senate recently held hearings regarding integrative medicine. The theme and something that was brought up again and again throughout the entire hearing was "health coach" This bodes extremely well for the future of the holisitic health counselor. If you have some time, I really urge you to listen to it. :)
