sweet blog. how was the music, Ed?

re: green apple volunteer efforts: apparently there was some snafu w/the property owner in Brooklyn. Jason busted his butt all day friday and then they were informed at the end of the day that they'd only be granted access from 9am - noon on Saturday and not at all on Sunday. since it's a 6 hour roundtrip and over $100 to get there and back for us, we chose not to go up on Saturday. pretty sure they had more than enough local help that day anyway, but i was bummed i didn't get a chance to help out.

i hope they finish that green roof though. Jason has some pics of Day 1, but they're not of rock stars or guys with scary piercings, so i'll spare you unless someone's particularly interested :)

Freida and I were hugging the rail from the first speaker until just before the lips took the stage. I had no idea that the lips were still popular with the 15-21 year old crowd, but then again I know very little (but as much as I want to) about the whole hipster thing. The only thing I do know is that I wanted to shoot Los Lobos, moe., and maybe the lips if I could stand to be up there for that long.

I swear though the hipsters on the rail to both my left and my right were real downers. On my right there was five or six dc yuppy hipsters making racial jokes about every speaker that wasn't white and numerous comments about Obama being king of the welfare generation and to our left there was a group of lipsters nonchalantly throwing trash all over the place at an earth day concert while both spitting and flicking cigarettes at the stage.

The sound up on the rail was brutal at times, even during the public speaking. The Los Lobos mix was the best I think and I enjoyed their set especially their take on bertha; they really make it their own.

The moe set started out as I expected with a Captain America opener cool enough. The all roads lead to home was pretty cool too. The Big World was meh. Everything after that was pretty rad though and the Tailspin, Darkness> George was fitting considering the locality to the power houses around the national mall.

We bailed from the rail shortly after moe. left the stage to seek refuge from the shit show that the rail was being turned in to by the groups I mentioned above. They were just starting as we made our way back to the metro.

It's a real bummer you guys didn't get to participate in the green roof project. You would think they would have had everything hammered out long before this past weekend.

Thanks again for the review.

Rob is looking good, like he's been working out or something.

That is too bad about the sound.

I've seen some good cultural events on the National Mall. I think it was... summer of 1998... July 4th weekend... the had an Americana music fest along with some other music event going on. Big concert by the Washington monument, and different mini-stages all up and down the mall. Everything from gospel to honkey-tonk to singer/songwriter to bluuues to 'slave songs' to rock-a-billy to... well, you get the picture... it was awesome.

Weird about the hipsters making racial jokes and dissing Obama. Seems totally anachronistic to hipsters I've met up in New England and Canada. Maybe there are different sects and subcultures with the hipsters...?

that's too bad about the sound, I had a chance to go to the New York City one with Chris Barron, Bernie Worrell and Deep Banana Blackout at the Bowery Ballroom. It was a decent concert but only 50-60 people actually showed up.
Probably not the best idea to make it volunteers only....

and on a Sunday night taboot. sorry we didn't make it up for it, Jeremy, but i'm glad you did. it was just too far to travel on a school night, especially after a weekend of spring cleaning locally. by Sunday night we were beat and more than a little sore (especially J, with the rooftop project Friday! i think he was the only guy there for it, hahaha).

Ed, thanks for the review. any plans to travel to NJ anytime soon? and if not, how far are you from Lewes? i miss your face :)
