  Phil Lesh and Friends

If you were to ask someone who's been to every Vibes, 2002 would undoubtedly be at or near the top of their list. That year, on an Independence Day weekend less than a year removed from Sept. 11, Phil Lesh and Friends breathed a renewed sense of hope and energy into the Vibe Tribe, lighting the songs with sense and color, holding away despair.  It's with reverential honor that we welcome Phil and Friends (Larry Campbell & Jackie Greene on guitars & vocals, keyboardist Steve Molitz, and drummer John Molo) home to GOTV 2008.

Phil Lesh:  Those looking for the inspiration of the current jam band movement need look no further than Phil Lesh. A founding member of the venerable American musical institution, the Grateful Dead, Lesh has continued to inspire while pushing the envelope with his highly evolved musical performances. The world-class musicians that have passed through Phil Lesh & Friends have thrilled audiences with their high-flying improvisations and timeless renditions of Grateful Dead classics. In 2005, Little Brown published Phil Lesh’s memoir titled: "Searching For The Sound - My Life with the Grateful Dead", which found the inventive bassist on the New York Times Best Seller List.  In 2006, Lesh released his first live concert DVD ~ Live at The Warfield showcasing a stellar performance at the historic San Francisco landmark. For Phil Lesh the relentless pursuit of improvisation is well known; fans can expect to hear Phil Lesh & Friends explore some of the Grateful Dead’s best loved songs, along with free flowing improvisation that keeps the feet tapping and the bodies swaying.

Jackie Greene:  Growing up in the Northern California’s foothill region - Jackie Greene honed his considerable musical skills performing in coffee houses and juke joints at a very early age.  The multi talented singer/songwriter blends a style that showcases his folksy blues roots with pedal to the metal maximum roots rock.  Jackie’s infectious vocal delivery ~ whether accompanying himself on guitar, harmonica or piano ~ has made him a mainstay on rock radio for the past several years.  Greene’s album Gone Wanderin’ on Sacramento’s DIG Music Label garnered him a California Music Award for the “Best Blues/Roots Album” in 2003 and remained on the Americana music charts for over a year. In 2004, Greene released his third album, Sweet Somewhere Bound and began receiving major radio play and recognition for singles like “Honey I’ve Been Thinking About You.” American Myth featured the radio favorite “I’m So Gone” and cemented Greene’s status on the Americana music scene.  His most recent release Giving Up The Ghost on 429 Records continues in the same classic Americana musical vein that has brought him so much success.  Jackie Greene comes to symbolize a rare versatility with an emotional honesty and musical skill that transcends every genre of music.  We are very pleased to feature Jackie Greene as a member of Phil Lesh & Friends.

Larry Campbell:  Born and raised in New York City, Larry Campbell is a self taught musician never having a formal music lesson on any instrument.   At the age of ten Larry learned to play the guitar by listening to The Beatles on the turntable before falling in love with bluegrass, country, and old timey music ~ adding fiddle, mandolin, banjo, and pedal steel to his musical arsenal. A fixture at New York City’s country music Mecca The Lone Star Café, Campbell performed with a list of players that define the Americana music genre:  Kinky Friedman, Jim Lauderdale, Doug Sahm, Buddy Miller, and Happy Traum.  Larry was also a member of the Woodstock Mountain Review an all star band featuring:  Bill Keith, John Sebastian, John Herald, Eric Anderson, Paul Butterfield, and Maria Muldaur.  As a sideman, Campbell is best known as a member of Bob Dylan’s “Never Ending Tour” band from 1997 through 2004 and is featured on Dylan’s classic recordings: Time Out Of Mind and Love and Theft.  In 2005 Larry released Rooftops which found the gifted musician performing old time fiddle tunes on the guitar.  Larry has also recorded and toured with Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett, Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson, B.B. King, and Paul Simon to mention only a few.  Most recently Larry has been working with The Band’s Levon Helm helping the legendary Americana music legend with his weekly “Midnight Rambles” as well as co producing Helm’s recent Grammy winning CD, "Dirt Farmer".  A renaissance musician, Larry Campbell has been a member of Phil Lesh & Friends since 2005.

John Molo:  In the endless landscape of an expanding Phil Lesh & Friends jam, the horizon is defined by the polyrhythmic pulse of John Molo’s drumming.  Growing up south of the Mason-Dixon Line in McClain, VA, Molo took up drumming at Langley High School best known for its “CIA Kids”~ the children of government employees.  Taking advantage of the school’s prestigious music program, Molo immersed himself in the regiment of drumming.  Deciding to further his musical studies at the University of Miami, Molo would meet his future musical collaborator Bruce Hornsby at the Florida institution.  Molo would later hook up with Hornsby when the singer-songwriter was forming his band The Range.  Bruce Hornsby and The Range would go on to record  “The Way It Is” which topped the American music charts  and earned the group a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1986.  With John Molo providing the backbeat, the band would enjoy continued musical success with songs such as:  “Mandolin Rain,”  “Jacob’s Ladder,” “Look Out Any Window,” and “The Valley Road.”  After the death of Jerry Garcia, John Molo was offered the drum slot in the post Grateful Dead band ~ The Other Ones where he first came to the attention of Deadheads.  Another career highlight was Molo’s performance at the Grammy Awards show with Don Henley performing “The End of the Innocence” before a worldwide television audience.  Molo’s propulsive drumming also defined former Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart’s offshoot band ~ Planet Drum.  Molo’s jam groove ensemble ModeReko was another ear opening project that the gifted drummer has been associated with.  Likewise for Molo’s tenure with Jemimah Puddleduck which featured Ratdog guitarist Mark Karan.  The versatile drummer also has toured and recorded with John Fogerty and is featured on the Creedence Clearwater Revival founder’s recently released The Long Road Home CD & DVD.   Most recently, Molo has been touring as a member of David Nelson and Friends with other Phil Lesh & Friends alumni:  David Nelson, Pete Sears, Mookie Siegel and Barry Sless. Of all the musicians that Phil Lesh has had as part of his “Friends” none has been as constant a presence as John Molo.  Molo’s explosive drumming is the pulse of Phil Lesh & Friends.

Steve Molitz:  Steve Molitz was born and raised in Los Angeles, and has been the keyboard player in Particle since its creation in 2000.  He's played almost 1000 shows around the world from Europe to Japan, and has recorded and performed with an array of musicians covering a wide range of genres. Recent standouts include the songs he wrote, produced and recorded for the video game Scarface: The World Is Yours, as well as his performance on G Love's latest album, Lemonade, featuring the single "Hot Cookin'". Particle's studio album, Launchpad (produced by Tom Rothrock), received critical praise from Rolling Stone and The New York Times, and was named the among the Top Ten albums of 2004 by the Associated Press. His innovative approach to vintage keyboards and analog synthesizers has been highlighted by multiple performances at Moogfest (A Tribute to Bob Moog), as well as his participation in helping to develop the latest Moog Synthesizer, the "Little Phatty". Keyboard Magazine describes Molitz's passionate performance style and dedication to feel "every note, every night" by saying he's a musical chameleon with an insatiable appetite for musical exploration. He is currently in the studio recording tracks for both Particle's upcoming studio album and another major video game soundtrack. Steve Molitz first performed with Phil Lesh and Friends in 2004 and this is his first national tour as a member of the band.
